Experimental drawing
The artist, Paul Klee defined drawing as “taking a line for a walk”. That idea of play and discovery is central to the ethos of experimental drawing which may take you places you couldn’t have imagined. You will learn about the work of contemporary Irish and international artists who use experimental drawing as their medium for making art in innovative ways. Through a process of looking, drawing and discussing, we will ask ourselves “what makes a drawing interesting?”
Based on the best international art school practices on generating creativity and creative thinking, Experimental Drawing will give you confidence in not being afraid to “make mistakes”. The most interesting discoveries can come from “mistakes”. Beginners will develop confidence in their ability to draw, using easy to use art materials such as ink, graphite, gouache, etc. Experienced artists will be encouraged to depart from tried and tested methods to be more experimental in their approach to making their own work.
Natural objects such as twigs and shells will be used as both subject matter and drawing tools. A walk will become more interesting!
Both representational and abstract drawing will be considered. Participants will learn how different styles of drawing can express calm, as in the work of Agnes Martin, or chaos, as in the work of Jackson Pollock. Through Experimental Drawing, you will gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary practices and enrich your way of seeing and working.
* Cost does not include accommodation. Artform also provide an artist accommodation package.
